About Our Advertising Major
As of Fall 2013, Advertising became an Area of Emphasis within the new College’s new Strategic Communications major.
The WVU Reed College of Media Advertising major teaches students how to develop and produce persuasive messages and advertising campaigns. Students build skills in writing, research, graphic design, direct marketing, media planning and campaign management.
Advertising students plan and produce advertising campaigns for actual businesses, gaining real-world experience that can lead to careers at advertising agencies, corporations and public-sector fields.
The College of Media also helps place students in internships that offer hands-on experience beyond the classroom. Students obtain internships everywhere from top New York advertising agencies to Capitol Hill and the White House.
The program boasts an active student-run advertising agency. Martin-Hall Agency offers students the opportunity to work with real clients and provides them with professional networking opportunities. Martin-Hall Agency team members also participate in the national AAF Competition.
Advertising Major Requirements
Advertising majors earn a Bachelor of Science in Journalism (BSJ), Advertising degree upon successful completion of the program.
To graduate, all College of Media majors must complete a minimum of 128 credit hours.
In addition to required College of Media core and Advertising major courses, students must take specified courses outside the College. Students must also complete a minor, as well as the University’s General Education Curriculum (GEC) requirements.
Finally, the College’s accreditation guidelines require that students take a minimum of 72 credit hours outside of the College. Typically, students meet this requirement through the GEC, minor and other non-College courses.
