College of Media Scholars Program
The College of Media Scholars Program provides an
academically talented and diverse group of students stimulating academic
environments to foster and develop independent thinking, creativity, and
Class size varies depending on the strength of each entering
class; however, each incoming cohort is limited to 20 students.
Students who meet the criteria for the WVU Honors College are automatically admitted to the College of Media Scholars Program. These criteria are:
- 3.7 high school GPA
- 26 ACT or 1250 SAT combined Evidence Based
Reading/Writing and Math
Note: WVU does combine the highest sub-scores from different test dates to create a “superscore” total or composite for admissions and scholarship consideration eligibility.
While there is no application deadline to be considered for admission to the College of Media Scholars Program, students should apply early if they wish to be considered for placement in the Honors College Residence Hall. Offers of admission to the Scholars Program will be made by February.
In addition to possible Honors College courses, College of Media Scholars take the following honors sections/courses within the College:
- JRL 191—Honors Journalism Orientation (1 cr.)
- JRL 215—Honors Media Writing (3 cr.)
- JRL 428—Honors Media Ethics & Law (3 cr.)
*This is an online course that is taken concurrently with JRL 101.
College of Media Scholars who are in the Honors College have the opportunity to reside with other Honors students in a residence hall dedicated to fostering a strong academic community for high-achieving students and receive university-wide registration priority.
College of Media Scholars are automatically admitted into the combined five-year bachelor’s/master’s program, and the GRE is waived. Automatic admission is contingent on maintaining the five-year program’s required 3.5 cumulative GPA.
College of Media Scholars gain access to guest speakers,
alumni, and other distinguished visitors to the College through invitations to
lunches, receptions, meetings, etc. During the summer after freshman year,
College of Media Scholars are assigned an alumni mentor as part of the Alumni
College of Media Scholars Program students must remain in
good standing with the WVU Honors College to maintain their status in the
