SPJ-Google News Lab Training Session

The Media Innovation Center will be hosting an SPJ-Google News Lab Training Session next Friday, September 29, 2017 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and we’d like to invite you to attend! 

This is a FREE hands-on training workshop offered by the national SPJ organization in partnership with Google News Lab. The trainings are intended to help journalists (and aspiring journalists!) learn to use Google News Lab tools in their news gathering, reporting and storytelling. 

It’s a great opportunity for students and faculty alike to gain very relevant skills within a day’s time.

During our training, Mike Reilley, our experienced SPJ-Google News Lab trainer, will provide an overview of useful Google tools such as Google Fusion Tables, MyMaps, Google Earth Pro, Google Trends and Google Reverse Image Search.

College of Media to host MDS and online minors panel discussion

The WVU Reed College of Media will host a panel discussion regarding the College’s online minors and Multidisciplinary Studies (MDS) major on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 4:30pm, in the forum of the Media Innovation Center. Students in attendance will learn more about the College of Media’s seven online minors—Advertising, Entertainment Media, Event Planning, Health Promotion, Public Relations, Sport Communications and Strategic Social Media— as well as its MDS program. 

“This is a great opportunity for students interested in online minors to hear from other students about their experiences in these programs,” said Aaron Hawley, MDS & Minors Coordinator for the WVU Reed College of Media. “Students will also learn how the MDS program can help them to customize their degree to best serve their specific interested and career goals.”

The discussion will feature both student and administrative representatives from the College’s online minors and MDS degree program. During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of both their peers and the programs’ administrators.

WVU Constitution Day program September 18 will address freedom of the press

West Virginia University’s annual observance of Constitution Day this year will focus on the role of a free press in a democratic society.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist will join WVU communications, journalism and law professors to address the erosion of the First Amendment, fake news, and why a free press is necessary for a strong democracy.

“Freedom of the Press: Constitutionally Enshrined Guardians of Democracy” takes place September 18 at 4 p.m. in the Event Hall at the WVU College of Law.

Education abroad faculty workshops and fair

Next week the Office of Global Affairs will host Workshops on Education Abroad on September 18 and 19 in the Laurel Room of the Mountainlair located on the Downtown Campus

These sessions change annually and are geared towards both new and experienced faculty leaders. Participants will review new items to consider for this year’s programming while taking part in opportunities to network and discuss best practices and past experiences. Faculty are invited to drop in and out as available. (See schedule below.)

Additionally, the Office of Global Affairs will host the Education Abroad Fair on Wednesday, September 20 from 10am – 4pm  in the Mountainlair Ballrooms located on the Downtown Campus. The Education Abroad Fair will feature faculty-led education abroad programs, exchange programs, international internships, and global service-learning programs.

College receives a $150,000 grant to expand community-based reporting aimed at bridging America’s divides

A foundation launched by the founder of eBay is supporting the efforts of West Virginia University’sReed College of Media to better tell the stories of Appalachian communities and to help bridge America’s political and cultural divides.

The Democracy Fund recently awarded the College of Media $150,000 to combine and advance three of its successful programs: the Innovator-in-Residence program, currently funded by the Knight Foundation; the start-up digital publication “100 Days in Appalachia,” and the social justice reporting collaboration between the College of Media and Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Apply for December Graduation--Deadline October 6!

The online application to graduate in December 2017 is now open - if you anticipate graduating in December 2017, you must complete the online graduation application by October 6th, 2017.  Applications will not be accepted after this date.

Please note, if you applied to graduate in a prior term but your degree was not granted, you MUST submit a new graduation application for December 2017.

If you will not complete all degree requirements by the conclusion of the fall term, please do not submit a graduation application at this time. Only students who will complete all requirements by that time will be eligible for December graduation.
