Dana Coester, an assistant professor in West Virginia University’s P.I. Reed School of Journalism, has created an award-winning documentary that isn’t your typical love story.

“Pretty,” which recently won an Award of Excellence in Narrative in the Faculty Video Competition at the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts, is a documentary love story using elements of photography, typography and design. The story, which follows a non-linear narrative, intertwines three generations of women in Coester’s family.

“On one level it explores the cultural desire to document experience and how we map the forensics of memory through photographs and artifacts,” said Coester. “But on the most basic level, it is the reconstruction of a private love story – a story unearthed when my grandfather, a photographer, died in 1989. This story was just one of many that began to emerge, revealing the hidden, ‘in-between’ stories that had haunted and transformed a half century of women in my family.”

SOJ alumnus and GolinHarris Executive Vice President Mike Fulton has shared an exciting opportunity for students interested in filmmaking.

GolinHarris, an international public relations firm, is working with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) to identify candidates for a filmmaking grant opportunity. 
NCBA will be awarding film-making grants to three students who will each create their own documentary about how beef gets from our pastures to consumer plates. The videos will be used by NCBA to educate key audiences about how beef is raised.

The program is not open to the general public, so the team is looking for the strongest candidates. The deadline to submit applications is March 19.

The Bridgestone Americas Safety Scholars Video Contest is a great way to have fun, be creative and win money for college, all at the same time.

To enter, make a short video (25 or 55 seconds in length) about auto safety. Students who produce videos that most creatively and effectively address safety auto topics will win a $5,000 college scholarship and a set of Bridgestone tires.
