Jon Schmitz, SOJ alum and staff writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, will speak to J-School students on Tuesday, Feb. 2. Schmitz will speak to Professor Bonnie Stewart’s Public Affairs Reporting class.
Schmitz started his career at the Intelligencer in Wheeling, W.Va. He was later hired as a staff writer for The Pittsburgh Press. There he covered local government, politics and the courts for 14 years. He also served brief stints as a columnist and editorial writer. When the Press closed in 1992, he moved to the Post-Gazette as bureau chief for local government and courts. After several years in that role, he became an editor on the local news desk. In January, eager to return to the front lines, he took on the transportation beat.
He has won and shared in several news writing and editing awards, most recently for participating in coverage of flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan.
