WVU PRSSA was honored to receive the Dr. F.H. Teahan award for outstanding community service at the “Academy of PRSSA awards” at the 2009 national PRSSA conference. The award recognizes a chapter that has executed projects that directly benefit the their community. WVU PRSSA has produced materials and events for several local organizations. The group has conducted public relations campaigns, offering time, talent and services to the Morgantown community. Some of these organizations include The Boys and Girls Club, The Children’s Miracle Network and Relay for Life.

Fifteen members of WVU PRSSA traveled cross-country to attend the PRSSA national conference in San Diego this month. During the trip, members met the national conference committee and other public relations professionals, got the chance to hear several high-profile speakers, explored possible public relations fields to pursue post graduation and learned the skills necessary to network and build relationships. The trip was immensely successful, giving students insight and professional development to prepare for a career in public relations.

West Virginia University will pay tribute to coal miners with a Miner’s Day program to be held on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. in the Mountainlair Blue Ballroom.
Recognizing the journalism world is changing by the minute, the WVU Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism has launched a new converged “journalism” major to better prepare students for careers in digital media.
The new major in journalism replaces the previous silos of broadcast news and news-editorial and requires students to produce content across media platforms as they will in today’s converged newsrooms.
Students in the new major will learn the fundamentals of reporting and writing, as well as visual design, multimedia storytelling and how to engage audiences in the digital era.
The Georgia State Games, one of the largest Amateur Olympic-Style Sports Festivals in the country, is accepting applications for internships. Organizers rely heavily on top quality interns to operate many of their sporting Events Projects and Programs. Interns get hands-on experience planning and implementing activities and programs.

Qualified individuals are invited to apply for two (5) Graduate Assistantships at the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC). These positions will involve development of curriculum and instructional materials (text and online) for the NAFTC, a program of the NRCCE – see http://www.naftc.wvu.edu for further information about the consortium and its training programs.
These assistantships will be funded for the terms listed above with a possibility of renewal for Summer and Fall 2010. The assistantships require an average of 20 hours per week year-round including semester breaks (there are no paid holidays or vacations), during standard business hours, on-site at the NAFTC Headquarters in the Ridgeview Industrial Park on Bakers Ridge Road (each assistant will be responsible for his/her own transportation). Each assistant will be paid a salary of $1,200.00 per month (subject to taxes) and will be eligible for a tuition waiver for each semester falling within the term of the assistantship.
Required Qualifications: (Candidates who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.) * Registration as a regular-status student in a WVU graduate program and enrollment on a full-time basis for each Fall, Spring, and one Summer term during this assistantship. * References attesting to successful experience performing instructional design and/or curriculum development in a highly technical subject area. * Demonstrated proficiency in behavioral and cognitive psychology and instructional design principles. * Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical concepts into terms that the general public can understand. * Proficiency using Windows XP/Vista, Microsoft Office, GroupWise, and other software products. * Self-directedness, organization, attention to detail, and responsiveness to client needs and project deadlines, ability to work collaboratively with the NAFTC headquarters staff, NAFTC member institutions, other graduate assistants, and student employees. Finalists will be interviewed in person.
The P.I. Reed School of Journalism will host its own December Convocation ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, in the Mountainlair Ballrooms.
While the SOJ ceremony begins at 9:30 am, graduates are asked to arrive by 8:30 am for line-up. Please report to the registration table in front of the Mountaineer Room on the second floor of the Lair.
The SOJ’s December Convocation ceremony includes a processional of graduation candidates, keynote speaker and student awards. Graduation candidates are formally recognized and cross the stage to shake hands with their program chair and the dean. A WVU photographer will be on hand to take photos of each candidate crossing the stage. Photos can be ordered online after the event. A light reception follows the ceremony.
