About May Commencement

In May, individual WVU colleges and schools host their own commencement ceremonies. The WVUReed College of Media’s May Commencement ceremony will be held on: 

Saturday, May 16, 2015 9:30 a.m.
WVU Creative Arts Center 

While the ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m., graduates should arrive by 8:30 a.m. for line-up.

The ceremony includes a processional of graduation candidates, speakers and student awards. Graduates are individually recognized and cross the stage as their names are called to shake hands and pause for photos with their program coordinator, the College of Media dean and the WVU presiding officer. A reception will follow the ceremony. The College of Media invites December 2014 graduates to join their fellow May 2015 graduates in this celebration. As a courtesy, the College also invites prospective August 2015 graduates to participate.

RSVP and Tickets for the Ceremony

The College’s Commencement ceremony is reserved for graduation candidates and their family members. To allow us to properly plan for the event, all candidates planning to attend the ceremony are required to complete an online RSVP form. (Please note: the RSVP process officially closed on Friday, March 6. If you did not RSVP, please contact Christa Currey at

Graduates will be able to claim and print their tickets starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11. Guest seating is limited for this event. Based on the number of RSVPs, each participating graduate will have access to FOUR GUEST TICKETS. Graduates do NOT have to claim a ticket for themselves. Guests, however, must have their printed tickets to enter the ceremony. Infants and toddlers two and under may sit in laps. All other children and adults must have a seat. Wheelchair spaces and handicap-accessible seating are available and will be counted as a ticket.

Once the guest ticketing system has been made available, graduates will have a limited time to claim their tickets. After that deadline, any remaining tickets will be made available through the ticketing website on a first-come, first-served basis. You will be notified by email when the website is re-opened to claim these remaining tickets.

Remember to print out the guest tickets and bring them to the ceremony. Photocopies of a ticket willNOT be accepted.

An overflow viewing area will be available in the lobby of the Creative Arts Center where guests can be seated and watch a live video stream of the ceremony on multiple TV screens if they are not seated in the theater. A ticket is not needed to sit in this area.

West Virginia University re-evaluates and plans each year’s May Commencement ceremonies with many details taken into consideration. The University schedules the most appropriate-sized venues according to graduate numbers of each college and venue availability, allowing us to celebrate with more than 4,000 graduates and welcome more than 30,000 guests in one exciting weekend. We take great pride in ensuring that every graduate is personally recognized on their special day and that it can be shared with as many guests as we can safely accommodate on our campus.

You will have until midnight, March 31, to claim your four guest tickets at the website provided below. Please follow the instructions on the website, select your seats and print your guest tickets.

Applying for Graduation

All graduation candidates must apply for graduation by March 6, 2015. Please note: Applying for graduation is separate from submitting an RSVP to the ceremony

Undergraduate Students

If you anticipate graduating in May 2015, you must complete the online graduation application by March 6, 2015, to ensure an audit is completed before mid-semester courses begin. You are only considered a May graduate if you are completing all of your course requirements at the end of the spring semester.

If you anticipated graduating in December 2014 and did not graduate, you must resubmit the online application by March 6, 2015. If you are completing your course requirements in the summer term and are therefore an August graduate, DO NOT complete the application at this time. You will be notified at a later date to apply for graduation. However, if you plan on participating in the ceremony, you must RSVPonline by the deadline.

Detailed below are instructions to apply for May graduation:
  1. Log into your MIX account
  2. Click on the STAR tab
  3. Click on the link “Click here to log into DegreeWorks”
  4. Verify major(s), minor(s), and area of emphasis (if applicable) are correct
  5. Contact Ronda Maxon ( with discrepancies
  6. Go back to STAR homepage in MIX
  7. Click on the link “Click here to enter STAR”
  8. Click on the link “Student Services and Housing”
  9. Click on “Student Records”
  10. Click “Apply to Graduate for Doctoral, Professional, Masters Students, and Selected Undergraduates”

If any of the address information listed on the application is incorrect, you must correct this in STAR. The address listed in STAR is where your diploma will be mailed. Graduate Students

Students in the MSJ program should apply for graduation during the first two weeks of the term in which they wish to graduate. 
To apply for graduation, complete the following steps:
  1. Log into your MIX account
  2. Go back to STAR homepage in MIX
  3. Click on “Click here to enter STAR”
  4. Click on “Student Services and Housing”
  5. Click on “Student Records”
  6. Click on “Apply to Graduate”

About Diplomas

In 2012, the University made a change in protocol as to how diplomas are distributed. In the recent past, diplomas were presented to students as they walked across the stage. Beginning in 2012, diplomas are mailed to graduates within three weeks of the graduation ceremony. Graduates will, however, receive a commemorative diploma cover, featuring the seal of the University, as they accept their congratulations.

Please note: Invitation to or participation in the ceremony is not confirmation that the student is certified to graduate. Graduation certification is completed after final semester grades are released.

Additional Details

Reception: The ceremony is expected to last approximately 90 minutes and will be followed by light refreshments in the main lobby of the Creative Arts Center.

Parking: Parking will be available in the Creative Arts Center parking lots. Officials will be present to direct traffic.

Outstanding Fines/Fees: Candidates should check with Admissions and Records at (304) 293-2124 to be certain that they do not owe any fines or fees. Outstanding dues may result in a delay in diploma mailing.

Attire: Participating candidates must purchase a cap, gown and tassel at the WVU Bookstore (304-293- 7467) or the Book Exchange (304-292-7354).

Photography: A professional photographer will take photos of graduates as they cross the stage. An email will be sent to the address provided on the photo/name card completed at the ceremony. Graduates will be able to order these photos immediately following the ceremony.

Printed Program: Students who applied for May graduation by the deadline will be listed in the ceremony program. Students who applied after that date may not be included due to printing requirements. Though they are invited to participate in the ceremony, August 2015 graduates will not be included in the May Commencement 2015 program. Their names will be listed in the December Commencement 2015 program.

Accommodations for Guests and Graduates with Disabilities: Special seating is available for guests with physical limitations, as well as guests requiring the services of interpreters on the platform. Please indicate on the RSVP form if you or one of your guests has a disability.
