About the Graduation Ceremony

May Commencement

Each May, individual WVU colleges and schools host their own commencement ceremonies. (There is no longer a “main” WVU graduation ceremony in May.) WVU releases the official schedule of May ceremonies in late fall.

The College of Media’s May Commencement ceremony includes a processional of graduation candidates, keynote speaker and student awards. Graduates are individually recognized as they cross the stage to receive their diplomas and shake hands with their program chair, the College of Media dean and the WVU presiding officer. A reception follows the ceremony. The College of Media invites all previous December graduates to join their fellow May graduates in this celebration.

Complete details about the May Commencement ceremony are sent to graduates via the College of Media website, College of Media eNews and MIX email throughout the spring semester. Formal letters of invitation and informational packets are mailed to graduation candidates and their families in early spring.

Graduation candidates are required to RSVP for the ceremony and reception, as there is limited seating for guests. The College of Media’s Commencement ceremony is reserved for graduation candidates and their families.

December Convocation

Though the College of Media does not host an individual graduation ceremony in December, we encourage December graduates to RSVP for and attend the WVU December Convocation event, typically held at the WVU Coliseum.

During this ceremony, all graduates will don academic regalia, walk across the stage as their names are read, shake the hands of WVU’s president and other members of the platform party, and receive a letter of congratulations. Because the event is held prior to the completion of finals due to the winter break and final exam schedule, degrees are not conferred at the convocation and diplomas are not awarded. Complete details, registration information and more are available on WVU’s website at http://decemberconvocation.wvu.edu/.

Typically, the College of Media hosts an honors ceremony and open house in Martin Hall prior to the WVU December Convocation event. Information is sent to students via the College of Media website, College of Media eNews and MIX email during the fall semester.
