Education abroad faculty workshops and fair

Next week the Office of Global Affairs will host Workshops on Education Abroad on September 18 and 19 in the Laurel Room of the Mountainlair located on the Downtown Campus

These sessions change annually and are geared towards both new and experienced faculty leaders. Participants will review new items to consider for this year’s programming while taking part in opportunities to network and discuss best practices and past experiences. Faculty are invited to drop in and out as available. (See schedule below.)

Additionally, the Office of Global Affairs will host the Education Abroad Fair on Wednesday, September 20 from 10am – 4pm  in the Mountainlair Ballrooms located on the Downtown Campus. The Education Abroad Fair will feature faculty-led education abroad programs, exchange programs, international internships, and global service-learning programs. 

Students are encouraged to attend so that they can discover the many opportunities for global engagement available at WVU.

Monday, September 18, 2017


9:00 am – 9:30 am Welcome Remarks and Staff Introduction Office of Global Affairs  


9:30 am – 10:20 am Faculty-led Program Development Dr. David Stewart  

Dr. David Stewart will discuss his experience developing and implementing faculty-led programs through his connections with Brasenose College, Oxford and the Royal University of Women in Bahrain.


10:30 am – 11:20 am WVU International Risk Management Tara George-Jones  

This session will focus on the WVU Travel Registration as required by the Provost's Office and Export Control. Information regarding the International SOS Emergency Assistance Provider and Comprehensive Travel and Health Insurance will be provided.


11:30 am – 12:20 am International Payments & Financial Concerns Rachel Hays & Joy Quintana

Payment Services will present on the financial resources available to support EA programs including procurement cards, international wire transfers and cash advances. Limitations and considerations will be discussed per previous experiences.

1:30 pm – 2:50 pm Faculty Panel: Curriculum Integration in Education Abroad

Dr. William Brustein, Dr. Dena Register, Dr. Lisa Dibartolomeo, Prof. Marion Holmes, Prof. Beth Nardella,  

This faculty panel will discuss the integration of education abroad into curriculum to meet student's academic needs. The panel will touch on current curriculum integration projects along with GEF requirements and examples of past successes.

9:00 am – 9:50 am Ed Abroad 101 – Info for Advising Students A. Morgan, D. Epps, & V. Yerkovich  

Education Abroad 101 Sessions explore the numerous Education Abroad opportunities available to WVU students including program types, credit transfer information, and financing.


10:00 am – 10:50 am Ed Abroad Funding for Students Financial Aid   & Aspire Office  

Financial Aid Counselors and the ASPIRE Office will provide a joint presentation regarding financial resources available to WVU students for Education Abroad opportunities.


11:00 am – 11:50 am Title IX Reporting for Education Abroad Mariana Matthews   & Carruth Center  

Title IX and the Carruth Center will discuss mandatory reporting policies that pertain to Education Abroad programming along with addressing issues such as culture shock and homesickness.

1:00 pm – 1:50 pm Developing a Faculty-led Program Dr. Alyssa Beall & Dr. Alex Snow  

Dr. Alyssa Beall and Dr. Alex Snow will discuss the planning and development process they have implemented for their rotating selection of faculty-led programs including courses to Thailand, Japan, Spain, Vietnam, and Israel.


2:00 pm – 3:00 pm Faculty Panel: Education Abroad Advising and Student Concerns

Brian Chang, Frederick McDonald, Cate Johnson, Amanda Morgan, Dr. Tricia Petty, Dr. Todd Hamrick

This faculty and staff panel will discuss the needs of students throughout the advising and application process to determining the best Education Abroad fit for a student's academic plan of study.
