Downtown restaurants celebrate community & cuisine with Morgantown Eats

Morgantown Eats is a weeklong celebration that kicks off on Dec. 5 with a Culinary Crawl where tour guides will take participants through downtown exploring the history of the area and sampling tasty eateries along the way. This celebration of cuisine continues through Dec. 12 with the first ever Downtown Morgantown Restaurant Week, with special discounted menus being offered by select local businesses.

Morgantown Eats is a project conceived by students at the WVU Reed College of Media in partnership with the Greater Morgantown CVB, Main Street Morgantown and the Monongalia Arts Center (MAC). Proceeds from the event support the MAC.

Martin-Hall Agency seeking new bold thinkers

The Martin-Hall Agency (MHA) is currently seeking creative-minded students who want to expand their skills and strengthen their resume while gaining real-world, hands-on experience in integrating marketing communications. MHA is recruiting members to fill all positions including creative, account services, social media, public relations and art direction.

Established in 2011, MHA originated from the Reed College of Media and is the only student-run integrated marketing communications agency at WVU. McNair Scholars Program now accepting applications

The McNair Scholars program at West Virginia University is once again giving first-generation and underrepresented college students the opportunity to pursue graduate studies.

Federally-funded by the TRIO Program, the McNair Scholars program prepares students for doctoral programs through immersion in research, partnership with faculty and attendance at academic conferences.

“We’re encouraging students to apply early because the selection process is highly competitive,” says Betty Mei, the McNair Scholars director. “This year, we only have fifteen openings to fill.”

WVU College of Media faculty, students to launch Kickstarter campaign for virtual and augmented reality app that shares stories of African American WWI veterans

In an ongoing effort to uncover the hidden stories of African American veterans, the West Virginia University Reed College of Media is partnering with Congressional Black Caucus Veterans Braintrust to develop an app that would allow users to travel back in history.

The app, TimeMap, will chart historic black veteran memorials across the country, as well as collect and share the stories of the African American experience during World War I.

To help support the development of the app, students in Associate Professor Joel Beeson’s storytelling class will launch a Kickstarter campaign this Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11.

Panel event: 'Movements of Peoples: Past, Present and Future'--Nov. 9

As part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary for the National Endowment for the Humanities, WVU will hold a panel event, “Movements of Peoples: Past, Present and Future,” on Monday, Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. at the College of Law Events Center. This panel will examine the current refugee crisis and will feature a keynote address on Europe’s refugees crisis in historical perspective by historian G. Daniel Cohen, Associate Professor of History at Rice University and author of, “In War’s Wake: European Refugees in the Postwar Order.” A downloadable flyer about the event is available online.

Beyond the Hype and Headlines: Election Panel Nov 12

The 2016 elections matter more than you think. This event is part of the David C. Hardesty Jr. Festival of Ideas and is co-sponsored by the WVU Reed College of Media.

While Donald Trump’s tweets and Hillary Clinton’s emails have dominated the headlines, there is actually much more at stake in the upcoming presidential election — issues that will help define our country’s course for current and future generations. A distinguished panel of Washington journalists and pundits from across the political spectrum will discuss why 2016 could be one of the most important elections in our lifetime.

The panel event will be held Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 202 Brooks Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

Internship Opportunity in Winchester, VA

Full Circle Marketing (FCM) is a full service marketing, advertising, public relations, promotional campaigns, event operations, and sponsorship development/sales company. FCM coordinates various marketing campaigns and events; including The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, Old Town Business Development Events in Winchester Virginia (Kidz Fest, Friday Night Live, Rockin Independence Eve, Downtown Tailgate, Octobeer Fest, Classic Movies, Sunday Concerts). Other projects have included: Valley Health Golf Benefit, National Memorial Day Parade, Tiger Woods AT&T National Golf Tournament, Washington Redskins Luncheons and Dinner, Blue Ridge Fall Races, Kelley Washington Football Camp, and multiple corporate special events. FCM also works with businesses consulting, strategizing marketing plans and ad placement and branding solutions in the local market.

Requirements and Tasks
• Good oral and written communications skills. Computer skills including MS Office, basic website knowledge/social media, email, and data management. Knowledge of adobe illustrator and photo shop is a plus.
• Assist in developing advertising, social media marketing and promotional campaigns. Also assisting with new ideas for management of current and new events. 
• Assist in writing and updating press releases, radio and TV copy. 
• Make phone calls and assist in developing and delivering sponsorships.
• Research competition and new ideas.
• Assist in day of event operations, from start to finish. 
• Attend Chamber events on behalf of FCM and to introduce yourself to potential employers.

This internship/position with FCM will provide a vast amount of practical hands-on experience with many events and tasks. It will allow you to use the knowledge gained and apply it in your work place. FCM will also assist the person (provided person has completed a satisfactory work record) in finding future employment upon taking their interests and skills to the next level and using business resources available within the industry.

Political Strategist Jeremy Bird to speak on campus Nov. 10

On Tuesday, November 10, the Pi Lambda Phi Jewish Lecture Series will feature two presentations by Presidental Campaign Strategist Jeremy Bird on the West Virginia University campus. This presentation will focus on some of his experiences and observations with Israeli elections. This event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the presentation.

One of the brightest young strategists in American politics, Jeremy Bird has worked for such high-profile clients as President Barack Obama and Senator Cory Booker on their political campaigns. He co-founded 270 Strategies, a political consultingfirm with clients worldwide. During the 2015 Israeli elections, he advised the groupV15, which nearly defeated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He also founded iVote, a Super PAC dedicated to helping Democrats win Secretary of State races, and he consulted the “Ready for Hillary” Super PAC campaign to promote Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential bid.
