The premier two-year newspaper fellowship program in the country just got better.

We currently are accepting applications for the next class of Fellows, who will begin in September 2015.

WVU Reed College of Media hackathon empowers young women in technology

Transformative. Life-changing. Eye-opening. These words describe the experience of young women who participated in a women-and-wearables hackathon this weekend at the West Virginia University Reed College of Media.

Forty-two women from WVU and universities across the country came together to develop innovative concepts for wearable technology and to learn how to overcome barriers in the growing media technology industry.

The College teamed with PBS MediaShift to co-host Hack the Gender Gap: A Women’s Hackathon on Wearables on Oct. 24-26.

“Audience engagement editor” is a fairly new job title in most newsrooms. The role of an audience engagement editor is to build an audience by delivering news on multiple platforms, fostering conversation online among readers and using reader comments and contributions in stories.

On Tuesday, October 21, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s first audience engagement editor, Jacob Quinn Sanders, will visit Martin Hall to talk about his role in the newsroom. His presentation, “Audience Engagement: Your wants but their needs,” will focus on what every communicator needs to know about building a lasting two-way commitment with an audience.

College of Media to co-host women's hackathon, symposium with PBS MediaShift

“This is one of the most important issues affecting women leaders in tech and media right now,” said Maryanne Reed, dean of the College of Media. “We want to spark a national conversation about the barriers facing women in technology, and we want to inspire young women to push beyond those boundaries by connecting them to women leaders in Silicon Valley.”

“Hack the Gender Gap: A Women’s Hackathon on Wearables” will bring college-age women from around the country to WVU to “hack” solutions for wearable technology and to learn about opportunities in this emerging marketplace, while being mentored by prominent female leaders in the industry.

The three-day event kicks off Friday, Oct. 24, with a Women of Technology symposium hosted at Google headquarters in Mountain View, California (5:30 p.m. PT / 8:30 p.m. EST). Hackathon participants at the College of Media’s new Media Innovation Lab on WVU’s downtown campus will participate in a live broadcast and interactive discussion with the panelists at Google.
