Eberly College at WVU seeks intern for development office

The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office is pleased to offer a paid summer internship for May 15th- August 15th. The intern will work in the Development Office on variety of projects related to the ECAS Strategic Plan and State of Minds Capital Campaign. Applicants need to have excellent writing and editing skills, the ability to communicate with a wide variety of individuals, the capability of being a self-starter, and vigorous attention to details. Experience with high-level fundraising is a plus.
The intern will be responsible for assisting the Associate Director of Development and the Operations Coordinator with daily tasks, to include but not limited to: alumni relations, fundraising efforts, social media assistance in event planning, and general office support. Management of online content will be a large responsibility. This includes website content and engagement in social networking sites: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. This person will be responsible for website updates and maintenance, for Eberly College and its departmental pages. This includes uploading content. Previous experience with Slate software is preferred, but not required.

A strong Journalism or English background is preferred.
The internship will require you to work 20 hours a week – scheduling of those hours is flexible. Some evening and weekend hours may be required on occasion.
The intern will report directly to Amanda Dymacek, the Associate Director of Development for the Eberly College. Ryan's Rally seeks social media intern

Ryan’s Rally LLC is looking for a public relations intern to help manage their social networking. The intern would work 15-20 hours each week for eight weeks.

Ryan’s Rally is a fundraising effort to help support the cost of medical care for Ryan Diviney, a former WVU student who was brutally beaten in 2009 and has since been in a coma.

The intern will follow and show understanding of using social media to promote and advance business goals and objectives. The intern will interact and understand the relationships built between website design and content, Facebook Business (Fan) Pages, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and other currently popular social media. Put some life in your Dead Week! Attend the News Trivia Bowl--May 1

WVU’s First Annual News Trivia Bowl, sponsored by the School of Journalism’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, will be this Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Mountainlair’s Gluck Theater. Admission is free, but all attendees are asked to donate $1 for The Rack, which helps to feed financially strapped WVU students.

The WVU New Trivia Bowl is a fun quiz-show format testing knowledge of news and news trivia. Four three-person teams will compete; two semifinals followed immediately by the final. The winning team gets a trophy and $150. There will be free snacks and door prizes. Josh Copen, WFGM morning show host and comedian, will emcee the event!

Graduate shares lessons about making mistakes and moving on

Below is a Q&A with A.J. about the experience?and the lessons he learned.

Q: What went through your head when you realized your profanity had been caught on air?


During the [third] break, the news director came in to tell me what had happened. I thought she was going to compliment me on how well I was doing, but when I found out what had happened, I felt horrible. After the commercial, I apologized profusely on-air. 


Q: What was the first thing you did after the broadcast that night?


I called my parents and some friends to tell them what happened. I told my Mom I messed up pretty bad. Then I just tried to contain it before it went crazy because I know how these things work. It was a serious incident, but I also knew the video was funny, so it would be popular. 


Q: Were you fired immediately or after the clip went viral? 


The clip went viral that night. Before I even left the station, it had 250,000 hits on Deadspin.com. I knew once morning came, it was going to take off even more. I met with the station’s general manager the next morning. No one was angry at all, but he told me, “There’s nothing we can do. I wish you the best of luck.” I apologized again for what happened, and that was it. I left to clean off my desk. I’d only been there three weeks, so there wasn’t much on it.


Q: How does it feel to go from recent graduate at your first job to an “Internet celebrity” overnight?


I guess it still hasn’t hit me. If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have wanted this to happen. I would just want to go back to work like everybody else and work my way to the top the way I’m supposed to.

Google executive to serve as keynote speaker at School of Journalism Commencement ceremony

Richard Gingras, Senior Director of News and Social Products at Google, will deliver the keynote address at the School’s 2013 Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 18 at 9:30 a.m. at the WVU Creative Arts Center.

For 30 years, Gingras has led highly regarded efforts in the development of online services, software and new media – pioneering uses of satellite networking for television and Web-based online services and, more recently, transforming the news business.

WVU journalism professor, students win international and regional awards

WVU P.I. Reed School of Journalism (SOJ) students and faculty continue to earn national and international recognition for their outstanding work.

Earlier this month, Assistant Professor Dana Coester earned the Broadcast Education Association’s (BEA) highest honor at the 2013 Festival of Media Arts. She was presented the “Best of Festival” award in the Faculty Interactive Multimedia Competition for the “Mobile Main Street” project, an initiative to engage small-community organizations, businesses and media in mobile app development and marketing to help fuel economic development in local communities.

Two students also were recognized at the competition. Krista Baker received third place in the Television News Anchor category of the Student News Competition for her work on “WVU News,” and Jamie McCracken tied for third place in the TV Sports Feature category of the Student Sports Competition.

Eberly College at WVU seeks marketing and communications intern

The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Communications Office is seeking one Communications and Marketing intern.

College of Engineering seeks design intern

The Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources is seeking an undergraduate intern to specialize in graphic design for the Statler College’s outreach and recruitment office. This student’s main responsibility will be developing designs for flyers and t-shirts, assisting with the design and compilation of recruitment materials, and updating the website.

This student will work with outside suppliers, WVU trademark and licensing, and various constituents across the Statler College and WVU as a whole. The responsibilities are not limited to this, and may also include scheduling photo shoots, compiling information for recruitment material, and keeping recruitment and outreach displays up to date.

This person must be able to work independently, as well as in groups. Creativity is an important attribute that this intern must possess, but he or she must also be able to work within the design constraints of the University. He or she must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple-projects at one-time. A background in graphic design, marketing, public relations, or art would be preferable.
